Gladstone and Britains Love of Wine (About)

Although there is still something of a divide in Britain between social class
and wine consumption, far more people now drink wine than ever before.
However, despite having one of the world's great wine producers only a short
boat trip away, there used to be a very pronounced social divide in wine use.
This article by Chis Bowlby from the BBC History Magazine website takes the
recent British efforts to raise the cost of alcohol (and thus lower excess
drinking) as a way into the idea that the modern, multi-class British love of
wine stems directly from the actions of nineteenth century trade reform under
famed Prime Minister Gladstone. It concludes that it was actually a change in
attitudes in the 1960s which saw wine sales rise and beer sales fall, but this
is a perfect way to frame discussions on trade laws!
