2 June 1879 Body of Louis Napoleon, Prince Imperial of France, is Found (About)

On 1 June 1879 in a deep _donga_ (gully) near the Tshotshosi river, a patrol
of British troops, part of the vanguard of the II Division invading column,
was ambushed by Zulu forces. Three men on the British side were killed - one
of them was the Prince Imperial of France, Louis Napoleon. The prince, dressed
in the uniform of the Royal Artillery and riding his favorite horse, 'Tommy',
was caught as the patrol attempted to escape. Wielding an assegai he had taken
from one of his assailants in his right hand, and a pistol in his left, he
bravely defended himself until he tripped in a hole and was overwhelmed.

The following day, 2 June, Lord Chelmsford sent on ADC, Molyneus, with a party
to search for the fallen. They found all three stripped, "_riddled with
assegai stabs_, and showing signs of the ritual "_gash in the abdomen which
always concludes the bloody work of Zulu slaughter_".

The third body found was that of the Prince Imperial. Although stripped a gold
chain with medallions was still around his neck. His spurs and one sock were
discovered a short distance away.
